Convert MP3 to WAV Online
Convert MP3 audio to PCM WAV for editing, production, or software that prefers uncompressed audio. FFmpeg decodes the MP3 and writes 16-bit PCM on the server. The tool is free, supports batches, and accepts MP3 uploads up to 100 MB per file.

How to convert MP3 to WAV
- 1
Upload MP3 files
Add one or more MP3 files to the queue. The server decodes each MP3 to PCM samples.
- 2
Start the WAV conversion
Run the queue. There is no lossy quality setting because the output is uncompressed PCM.
- 3
Download the WAV
Download each WAV file or collect the batch in a ZIP. Check available storage first because WAV files are large.

About MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
Exceptionally broad support, small files, and easy streaming or playback on almost every device. Lossy compression discards audio information; quality depends on bitrate, encoder, and source.
Format referenceAbout Waveform Audio File Format
Lossless, straightforward to edit, and ideal for production, mastering, and archival work. Very large files compared with compressed audio; metadata and codec support vary by application.
Format referenceWhy convert MP3 to WAV?
- Open audio in an editor or DAW that handles WAV more reliably than MP3.
- Work with uncompressed samples without adding another lossy encode during editing.
- Use a WAV intermediate for analysis, transcription, or audio cleanup.
- Create a standard PCM file for a workflow that does not accept MP3.
Will quality change?
Converting to WAV does not restore detail lost during the original MP3 encode. It only decodes the existing audio into uncompressed PCM. The WAV is lossless with respect to the decoded MP3, but it is not a lossless copy of the original recording. Expect much larger files.
Processing and limits
- Processing
- Server-side
- Engine
- FFmpeg with 16-bit PCM output
- Maximum size
- 100 MB per MP3 file.
- Batch support
- Yes, multiple MP3 files can be queued.
- Quality controls
- No quality slider. WAV output uses PCM audio, so the main variable is sample format and source quality.
The MP3 is uploaded over HTTPS and decoded by FFmpeg to PCM WAV on the server. The uncompressed file is returned as a download. Temporary files are removed after the request.
- Existing MP3 compression artifacts remain in the WAV.
- Uncompressed WAV files are much larger than the source MP3.
- Metadata and cover art may not be preserved in the WAV output.
Platform compatibility
WAV is supported by Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and most audio editors. It is a practical production and editing format, though it is inefficient for streaming or email because of its size.
When not to convert
- Do not expect WAV conversion to improve sound quality that the MP3 already lost.
- Use MP3 or another compressed format when file size or streaming bandwidth is the priority.
- If you need the original recording quality, start from the uncompressed master rather than the MP3.
Frequently asked questions
- Does MP3 to WAV improve audio quality?
- No. The MP3 has already discarded audio information. WAV stores the decoded result without adding another lossy step, but it cannot restore the missing detail.
- Why is the WAV so much larger?
- WAV uses uncompressed PCM samples, while MP3 uses lossy compression. A short MP3 can expand to many times its size as a WAV.
- Is WAV lossless?
- WAV can hold lossless PCM audio, but the source MP3 was already lossy. The container is lossless relative to the decoded MP3, not relative to the original recording.
- Can I edit the WAV in a DAW?
- Yes. PCM WAV is widely accepted by audio editors and DAWs. Save a separate project file rather than repeatedly converting the same MP3.
- Are ID3 tags preserved?
- Metadata and cover art support varies when moving from MP3 to WAV. Treat the audio as the reliable part and verify tags in your editor.
- Can I batch convert MP3s?
- Yes. Queue multiple MP3 files and download the WAV outputs together. Check disk space because the uncompressed batch can be large.
