Convert JPG to WebP Online

Convert JPG photos to WebP for smaller web images and faster page loads. The browser encodes the standard conversion with Canvas, with a Sharp server fallback when needed. It is free, supports batches, and accepts server uploads up to 100 MB.

How to convert JPG to WEBP

  1. 1

    Upload JPG images

Drop one or more .jpg files into the queue. Each image is read at its current dimensions.

  2. 2

    Choose WebP quality

Set the quality level in Options. A high value is best for product photos and images with fine texture.

  3. 3

    Convert and download

Run the conversion and download the WebP files individually or as a ZIP.

About JPEG image

Very small files for photographs, universal application support, and an adjustable quality setting. Lossy compression can create block and ringing artifacts; it has no alpha transparency and is poor for sharp line art or screenshots.

About WebP image

Good photo compression, lossless and alpha modes, animation, and broad modern browser support. Older desktop and mobile applications may not open it; some editors handle animation and metadata poorly.

Why convert JPG to WEBP?

  • Deliver smaller hero images and product photos on modern websites.
  • Reduce bandwidth while keeping a familiar photographic look.
  • Prepare images for browsers that support WebP and fall back to the original JPG elsewhere.
  • Create a web delivery copy without changing the source photo archive.

Will quality change?

The conversion re-encodes an already lossy JPEG into WebP, so it cannot recover detail and may add a small amount of generation loss. At a sensible quality setting the result usually looks close to the source while being smaller. JPEG has no alpha channel, so the WebP output is opaque. Very low quality settings can create visible blocking around edges.

Processing and limits

Processing
Browser first, server fallback
Engine
Browser Canvas, with Sharp as the server fallback
Maximum size
Server fallback accepts files up to 100 MB. Browser conversions are limited by available memory.
Batch support
Yes, multiple JPG files can be queued.
Quality controls
Adjustable WebP quality. Higher values preserve more detail; lower values reduce size.

The browser decodes the JPG and encodes WebP locally when the codec is available. If the local encode fails, the server uses Sharp and returns the WebP. The file is not kept after the download is produced.

  • JPEG artifacts in the source remain part of the image after conversion.
  • The conversion cannot add transparency because the input JPEG has no alpha.
  • Some older apps and workflows do not support WebP.

Platform compatibility

WebP works in current browsers on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. It is a strong web delivery format, but keep the JPG if the file must open in older desktop software or a service that only accepts JPEG.

When not to convert

  • Do not convert when the recipient's software does not support WebP; JPG is the safer universal choice.
  • If the original JPEG is already heavily compressed, another lossy encode may make artifacts more visible.
  • For print or archival delivery, keep a high-quality source rather than a web-optimized copy.

Frequently asked questions

Does JPG to WebP lose quality?
Yes, because WebP is encoded from the decoded JPEG. At a high quality setting the difference is often small, but the conversion is not lossless.
Can WebP add transparency to a JPG?
No. The source JPEG has no alpha channel, so the WebP output is fully opaque.
Why convert JPG to WebP for a website?
WebP often produces smaller files than JPEG at similar visual quality, which can reduce page weight and improve loading performance in modern browsers.
What quality should I use?
Start with a high quality value and compare the file size. Lower the setting gradually for decorative images, but keep it higher for text and detailed product shots.
Can I convert a batch of JPG photos?
Yes. Add multiple images to the queue, apply a shared quality setting, and download the WebP results together as a ZIP.
Does WebP open on older devices?
Not always. Modern browsers support it, but older desktop software and some mobile apps may not. Keep the JPG if compatibility is uncertain.
